About Beth Chesser

I've always been drawn to both what we see and what we hear. As a child it started with learning to play the piano and as an adult living in Brighton I sang in bands, while photography gave me another way to explore composition, light and atmosphere. At university, those two worlds converged through digital music and sound art, where studying animation and moving image sparked a renewed fascination with visual storytelling. That journey eventually led me to jewellery – a medium where sculpture, design and craft come together.

I went on to study jewellery manufacturing and design at the British Academy of Jewellery in Birmingham and London. Alongside traditional goldsmithing, I immersed myself in the technical side of making, developing an in-depth understanding of precious metal casting while working in the 3D printing department at the renowned Birmingham Jewellery Quarter casting house, JewelCast. Since then, my work has continued to sit at the meeting point of technology, craftsmanship and art.

My debut collection, Multiplane, is rooted in that intersection. Inspired by the multiplane camera developed by animation pioneer Lotte Reiniger, the collection explores depth, perspective and the shifting relationship between foreground and background. Rather than creating movement on screen, I translate these ideas into precious metal through layered forms, negative space and sculptural geometry. The clean, understated aesthetic of my jewellery is also shaped by the time I spent living in Helsinki, where Scandinavian design further deepened my appreciation for simplicity, balance and material honesty.

Every piece of jewellery is thoughtfully crafted using a combination of traditional goldsmithing techniques and contemporary technologies. Produced in small batches from my studio just outside Oxford, each design receives the time and attention it deserves. I also work closely with skilled artisans in Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter, celebrating the UK's rich manufacturing heritage while creating modern jewellery designed to be worn, treasured and remembered.
