‘A’
A’s Wedding Ring: An Octagon Ring, Made Solid. Three metals, one decision. I mocked up A’s Octagon Ring in 9ct yellow gold with white rhodium plating, solid 9ct yellow gold, and 9ct white gold to help him choose his wedding ring. He went solid yellow gold, with a little help getting the fit just right for everyday wear.
THE STORY:
A wedding ring is a piece unlike any other in a jewellery box. It's the one that's worn every single day, for decades to come, so when A came to me wanting his wedding ring to be an Octagon Ring, getting the details right mattered as much as the design itself.
A already knew the design he wanted, the Octagon Ring's clean, faceted form felt right for what he was after. What he hadn't yet decided was the metal, so before committing to anything, I put together a few options to help him see and compare them properly rather than choosing from a description alone.
I mocked up three versions: a 9ct yellow gold ring with a white rhodium plating on the signature layers for a brighter, contrasting finish, a full 9ct yellow gold ring in its natural warm tone, and a 9ct white gold ring for something cooler and more contemporary. Seeing the Octagon Ring rendered in each metal made the decision far easier than weighing it up in the abstract, the differences in tone and character between the three became obvious once they were sitting side by side.
A settled on the solid 9ct yellow gold, the version that felt most like him, without a plated finish that would ever need topping up over the years ahead.
With the design and metal decided, the last piece of the puzzle was fit. A wedding ring is worn every day, through hot summers and cold winters, so getting the size exactly right matters more here than almost anywhere else. I talked A through measuring properly at home, accounting for how fingers can change size through the day and with temperature, to make sure the ring he'd be wearing for the rest of his life would fit as comfortably on day one as it would for years afterward.
The result is a ring that's entirely A’s: a design he loved, a metal chosen with confidence rather than guesswork, and a fit made to last a lifetime of everyday wear.
